15. The Great Flood

Whitewood Creek overflows and partially destroys Deadwood.

This area looks different than it did back when Whitewood Creek was the dominant, and sometimes indomitable, feature of Deadwood. Its water wreaked havoc in 1883. Flooding returned often until the 1960s, when the creek was contained under the highway.
You are now on the edge of what was Deadwood’s wholesale district. Here two rail lines brought commercial goods and new residents to a growing city. Farther down Lee Street, you’ll pass a bust of Wild Bill Hickok carved by Crazy Horse Memorial sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski.

Follow Lee Street to Sherman Street, then half a block up Deadwood Street to interpretive sign No. 16.
